Theme
Independence & Intentional Control
Big Idea
I can do things on purpose, with control, and by myself. I know about celebrations that bring people together. I can count all the way to 8.
Parent Focus
Independence and intentional control are chosen as the Month 8 theme because the second half of the toddler year is where genuine independence emerges.

What Your Child Will Learn This Month
Literacy
- Letters R, S, T, U, V — sound-first introduction. Five letters this month — the most of any month. Festival vocabulary: Diwali (lights, diyas, fireworks), Eid (moon, sweets, prayer), Christmas (star, gifts, carols), Holi (colours, water, spring), Pongal or Sankranti (harvest, sun, rice).
- Child produces at least 3 of 5 letter sounds R/S/T/U/V when shown. Child names at least 3 festivals and one feature of each. Child connects a letter sound to a festival word spontaneously.
Numeracy
- Numbers 7 and 8 — extending numeral recognition and touch-counting from last month's 1 through 6. Seven introduced with the seven days of the week connection. Eight as two groups of four.
- Child recognises written numerals 7 and 8. Child counts out 7 or 8 objects correctly with touch-counting. Child connects 7 to the seven days of the week.
Fine Motor
- Grain pouring with spoon — controlled scoop and pour. Paintbrush painting with combined vertical and horizontal strokes — building the cross-stroke pattern. Curved line tracing independently — no teacher narration. Bean sorting with increased focus — longer duration, smaller beans.
- Child pours grain with a spoon with minimal spillage. Child paints both vertical and horizontal strokes in a single session. Child traces a curved line independently without adult narration. Child sorts small beans using pincer grip for 8+ minutes.
Gross Motor
- Heavy Work 3 — pushing a heavy box or laundry basket. Crawl and step over a low obstacle sequence. Standing on one foot with light adult support. Rolling on mats — vestibular input and body confidence.
- Child pushes a heavy box using full-body lean. Child crawls and steps over a low obstacle in a combined sequence. Child stands on one foot for 3–5 seconds with light adult support.
Sensory
- Phase 8 — Control, Intention and Independence. Week 1: Sticker pressing with firm intentional finger pressure, masking tape stick and peel. Week 2: Earbud dot painting with deliberate pattern, fingertip stamp printing. Week 3: Clay tool press with precision, wooden shape press into clay. Week 4: Independent sensory tray setup and pack away, self-select and self-start sensory tray.
- Child applies firm intentional finger pressure in sticker and stamp activities. Child creates a deliberate earbud pattern independently. Child independently sets up, uses, and packs away a sensory tray without adult direction.
