What Your Child Will Learn This Month

🗣️

Literacy

  • Letter sounds U, V, W, and X — four new sounds, continuing the accelerated pace. These are among the less common sounds in early vocabulary, so anchor words are chosen for maximum familiarity (Umbrella for U, Van for V, Water for W, and a simple X-ray or box anchor for X).
  • Child produces the correct sound for U, V, W, and X when shown the letter. Child names at least one word starting with each sound. Child attempts guided tracing of all four letters.
🔢

Numeracy

  • Number recognition and counting 18, 19, and 20 — completing the first full 1-to-20 counting range of the year.
  • Child counts a set of up to 20 objects with support. Child recognises the numerals 18, 19, and 20. Child attempts guided tracing of all three.

Fine Motor

  • Week 1: paper tearing and pasting. Week 2: spoon transfer with liquid (an advance on Month 3's dry-grain transfer). Week 3: clay modelling. Week 4: puzzle solving.
  • Child tears paper with control and pastes it purposefully. Child transfers liquid by spoon with reduced spillage. Child models a simple recognisable shape from clay. Child completes a more complex puzzle than in Month 3.

Gross Motor

  • Week 1: jumping over a rope. Week 2: climbing a play structure. Week 3: throwing and catching. Week 4: an obstacle course integrating the month's skills.
  • Child jumps over a low rope with both feet. Child climbs a play structure with growing independence. Child throws and catches with a partner. Child completes an obstacle course independently.
🎨

Sensory

  • Week 1: free play. Week 2: sand play. Week 3: water play. Week 4: pretend play — continuing the rotation, now themed around friendship and community where natural.
  • Child engages purposefully in each week's free-play category for a sustained period without adult redirection.
✏️

Creative

  • Friendship and community art progresses from a friendship portrait, through helper- and group-themed contributions, before children combine their work in a Growing Together class community mural.
  • Child creates a friendship- or community-themed craft, names the friend or helper idea it shows, and contributes a piece to the shared mural.
💛

Well-being

  • A friendship circle activity, turn-taking games, and group singing combined with a small-group cooperative task — deepening the peer cooperation introduced in Month 6.
  • Child participates actively in the friendship circle. Child takes turns appropriately during a group game without needing repeated reminders. Child sings as part of the group and completes a small-group task with at least one peer.
🌍

General Awareness

  • Community friends — identifying people in the wider community who help or connect with the child (neighbours, family friends, classmates from other classes), extending the peer-relationship focus beyond the immediate classroom buddy system from Month 3.
  • Child names at least 2 people in their wider community circle. Child describes how one of these people helps or connects with them.

Science

  • Child produces the correct sound for letters U, V, W, and X
  • Child attempts guided tracing of U, V, W, and X
  • Child counts a set of up to 20 objects with support
  • Child recognises numerals 18, 19, and 20
🎵

Music

  • 'Magic Words Rhyme' and 'Bhoom Chikka Bhoom' — the first reinforces polite social language (please, thank you) fitting the community-friends theme, the second is a rhythmic, high-energy movement song.
  • Child sings along with recognisable words and performs associated actions for both songs.

Practical Life

  • Children set up and tidy the friendship-circle space — cushions, talking piece, and calm seating — before and after the circle.
  • Child independently completes at least one setup or tidy-away task for the friendship circle with growing consistency.

For Families

Conversation starters

  • Talk about neighbours, family friends, or community helpers your child knows
  • Practice counting to 20 together during everyday routines
  • Play simple turn-taking games at home — board games, ball games, or card games
  • Ask about: Child produces the correct sound for letters U, V, W, and X

Home activity

Community friends walk: take a short walk in your neighbourhood and greet or name people your child knows — a shopkeeper, a neighbour, a family friend — discussing how each person is part of your community.
