What Your Child Will Learn This Month

🗣️

Literacy

  • Revision of letter sounds A through P in mixed, random order, followed by new letter sounds Q, R, S, and T. Anchor words drawn from the festivals theme where possible (Star for S, connecting to festival lights).
  • Child correctly produces sounds for A through P when shown in random order. Child produces the correct sound for Q, R, S, and T. Child attempts guided tracing of the four new letters.
🔢

Numeracy

  • Number recognition and counting 14, 15, 16, and 17, continuing the double-digit counting progression from Month 7.
  • Child counts a set of up to 17 objects with support. Child recognises the numerals 14, 15, 16, and 17. Child attempts guided tracing of all four.

Fine Motor

  • Week 1: clay rolling. Week 2: buttoning practice. Week 3: drawing shapes. Week 4: bead sorting.
  • Child rolls clay into balls or snakes with control. Child buttons independently with growing speed. Child draws recognisable shapes from memory. Child sorts beads by colour or size.

Gross Motor

  • Week 1: zig-zag running. Week 2: hopping independently. Week 3: ball kicking at a target. Week 4: balance walk.
  • Child runs a zig-zag path with directional control. Child hops independently without adult support. Child kicks a ball toward a specific target with improving accuracy. Child walks a balance line with growing steadiness.
🎨

Sensory

  • Week 1: free outdoor play. Week 2: indoor open-choice free play. Week 3: festival-pattern sand play. Week 4: festival-themed pretend play.
  • Child engages purposefully in each week's sensory or free-play experience for a sustained period, making an indoor choice or creating a simple sand pattern when relevant.
✏️

Creative

  • Festival craft work progresses from a festival symbol, to colours and patterns, to lights, stars, and sweets, before children create a Celebrating Together class display.
  • Child creates a festival-themed craft, names a colour, pattern, or symbol used, and contributes respectfully to the shared class display.
💛

Well-being

  • A classroom helper role (rotating responsibility), independent care of personal belongings, show and tell with a favourite item, and following the full daily schedule without adult reminders.
  • Child performs their assigned classroom helper task. Child keeps track of their own belongings across the day. Child presents a favourite item during show and tell. Child moves through the full daily schedule with minimal or no prompting.
🌍

General Awareness

  • Festivals — naming festivals celebrated by the children in the class and describing associated symbols, foods, or activities (lights, colours, sweets, family gatherings).
  • Child names at least 2 festivals. Child describes one symbol, food, or activity associated with a festival they celebrate.

Science

  • Child reviews letter sounds A through P correctly in mixed order
  • Child produces the correct sound for letters Q, R, S, and T
  • Child counts a set of up to 17 objects with support
  • Child recognises numerals 14, 15, 16, and 17
🎵

Music

  • 'Walking Through the Jungle' and 'Old McDonald' — the first a high-energy adventure and animal-sound song, the second a classic farm-animal song reinforcing Month 6 vocabulary while adding new verses and structure.
  • Child sings along with recognisable words and performs associated actions and animal sounds for both songs.

Practical Life

  • Children carry out rotating classroom-helper responsibilities and care for materials, belongings, and show-and-tell items throughout the day.
  • Child completes an age-appropriate helper task or returns personal and classroom materials with growing independence.

For Families

Conversation starters

  • Talk about festivals your family celebrates — the foods, colours, lights, or traditions involved
  • Practice counting to 14 through 17 together during daily routines
  • Review letter sounds A through T with everyday objects
  • Ask about: Child reviews letter sounds A through P correctly in mixed order

Home activity

Festival show and tell practice: help your child choose a small item connected to a festival your family celebrates, and practice describing it in one or two sentences before bringing it to school.
