What Your Child Will Learn This Month
Literacy
- Letter sounds N, O, and P, continuing the sound-first approach. Anchor words drawn from the seasons theme where possible (Numb/cold for N is a stretch — Nest, Orange for O connecting to weather/fruit, Puddle for P connecting to rainy days).
- Child produces the correct sound for N, O, and P when shown the letter. Child names at least one word starting with each sound. Child attempts guided tracing of N, O, P.
Numeracy
- Number recognition and counting 11, 12, and 13 — the first entry into double-digit counting, building on the completed 1-to-10 range from Month 6.
- Child counts a set of up to 13 objects with correct one-to-one correspondence, with support for the transition past 10. Child recognises the numerals 11, 12, and 13. Child attempts guided tracing of all three.
Fine Motor
- Week 1: bead threading (revisited with more beads). Week 2: paper folding. Week 3: sponge dabbing. Week 4: peg board.
- Child strings more beads with greater speed than in Month 4. Child folds paper along a guided line. Child dabs a sponge to create a controlled print pattern. Child places pegs into a peg board with pincer precision.
Gross Motor
- Week 1: tiptoe walking (revisited from Month 3 with greater distance/control). Week 2: throwing into a basket. Week 3: crawling race. Week 4: jumping in place.
- Child walks on tiptoes for a longer distance than in Month 3. Child throws an object into a basket target. Child crawls with speed in a race format. Child jumps in place repeatedly without losing balance.
Sensory
- Week 1: open-ended free play. Week 2: hot-day sand imprints. Week 3: rainy-day puddle pouring. Week 4: weather-and-seasons pretend play.
- Child engages purposefully in each week's sensory or free-play experience for a sustained period, using hot-day or rainy-day vocabulary when relevant.
Creative
- Season crafts progress from a cold-weather sweater, to a hot-day sun, to a rainy-day umbrella, before children combine their work in an Our Seasons class display.
- Child creates a season-themed craft, names the season it represents, and contributes a piece to the shared display.
Well-being
- Feeling talk — naming and discussing emotions in more depth than earlier months. A daily teacher hug or hi-five routine to build connection. Story time focused on school happiness. Quiet time introduced as a self-regulation tool.
- Child names at least 4 basic feelings. Child participates in the daily hug/hi-five routine. Child settles during quiet time with growing independence.
General Awareness
- Seasons — hot, cold, and rainy days. Naming each season, identifying appropriate clothing, and connecting each to associated weather and activities.
- Child names the three seasons discussed. Child identifies appropriate clothing for at least one season (umbrella for rain, sweater for cold). Child describes one activity associated with each season.
Science
- Child produces the correct sound for letters N, O, and P
- Child attempts guided tracing of N, O, and P
- Child counts a set of up to 13 objects with support
- Child recognises numerals 11, 12, and 13
Music
- 'Jingle Bells' and 'I Am a Shining Star' — the first connects to the cold-season/festive period, the second is an affirming, confidence-building song well-suited to the month's emotional-wellbeing focus.
- Child sings along with recognisable words and performs associated actions for both songs.
Practical Life
- Children set up and return the seasonal clothing sorting station, placing real items in hot, cold, and rainy sections.
- Child independently sorts and returns at least one clothing item to the appropriate seasonal section during setup or tidy-away.
