What Your Child Will Learn This Month
Literacy
- Letter sounds J, K, L, and M — four new sounds this month, reflecting the accelerated mid-year pace. Anchor words drawn from the animal theme where possible (Jackal or Jaguar for J, Kangaroo for K, Lion for L, Monkey for M).
- Child produces the correct sound for J, K, L, and M when shown the letter. Child names at least one animal word starting with each sound. Child attempts guided tracing of all four letters.
Numeracy
- Number recognition and counting 8, 9, and 10 — three new numbers, completing the 1-to-10 range for the first time this year.
- Child counts a set of up to 10 objects with correct one-to-one correspondence. Child recognises the numerals 8, 9, and 10. Child attempts guided tracing of all three.
Fine Motor
- Week 1: folding napkins. Week 2: transferring objects with tongs. Week 3: drawing circles. Week 4: clay flattening.
- Child folds a napkin with reasonable alignment. Child transfers objects using tongs with growing control. Child draws a recognisable circle shape. Child flattens clay using palm pressure.
Gross Motor
- Week 1: marching. Week 2: catching a ball. Week 3: jumping over small objects. Week 4: an obstacle race integrating the month's skills.
- Child marches with coordinated arm-leg opposition. Child catches a ball thrown gently by a partner. Child jumps over small objects without tripping. Child completes an obstacle race independently.
Sensory
- Week 1: free play. Week 2: sand play. Week 3: free play. Week 4: pretend play — continuing the established rotation, now themed around animals where natural.
- Child engages purposefully in each week's free-play category for a sustained period without adult redirection.
Creative
- Animal art progresses from masks and pet collage to farm-animal crafts, before children combine their work in an Animal Kingdom habitat display.
- Child creates an animal-themed craft, names the animal it shows, and contributes a piece to the shared habitat display.
Well-being
- Speaking in circle (saying one full sentence), cooperative group block play, helping friends, and kind words practice — a shift toward active peer contribution and community care.
- Child says one full sentence during circle time. Child participates in shared block building with at least one peer. Child demonstrates a helping behaviour and uses a kind word unprompted at least once.
General Awareness
- Wild, pet, and farm animals — naming animals within each category and identifying where each type of animal typically lives.
- Child names at least 2 animals in each of the three categories. Child sorts a mixed set of animals into wild, pet, and farm groups correctly.
Science
- Child produces the correct sound for letters J, K, L, and M
- Child attempts guided tracing of J, K, L, and M
- Child counts a set of up to 10 objects with one-to-one correspondence
- Child recognises numerals 8, 9, and 10
Music
- Two Kannada rhymes — 'Naayi Mari' and 'Rotti Angadi Kittappa' — introducing regional language and rhythm alongside the animal theme.
- Child sings along with recognisable words and performs the associated actions for both rhymes.
Practical Life
- Children set up and return the animal sorting station, placing wild, pet, and farm animals in the correct sections.
- Child independently sorts and returns at least one animal to the appropriate section during setup or tidy-away.
For Families
Conversation starters
- Name and sort animals together — wild, pet, or farm — using toys, books, or a zoo or farm visit
- Practice counting to 10 during everyday routines — steps, toys, snack pieces
- Encourage your child to share one sentence about their day at dinner
- Ask about: Child produces the correct sound for letters J, K, L, and M
Home activity
Animal sort and count: gather animal toys or picture cards and sort them into wild, pet, and farm groups, then count how many are in each group — practising counting all the way to 10 if the total allows.
