What Your Child Will Learn This Month
Literacy
- Pre-writing strokes (001): horizontal lines, vertical lines, diagonal lines, curves, and circles. Pencil grip development. Left-to-right directionality. Capital letter revision from Month 1.
- Child traces horizontal, vertical, and diagonal strokes with directional control. Child holds a pencil or crayon with a recognisable grip. Child demonstrates left-to-right stroke direction.
Numeracy
- Shapes (002): circle, square, triangle, rectangle — identification, naming, and finding in the environment. Shape properties: corners versus no corners, curved versus straight sides.
- Child names all four shapes correctly. Child identifies shapes in the real environment. Child describes one property of each shape (e.g. a circle has no corners).
Fine Motor
- Pre-writing strokes (001). Spoon transfer of dry grains — controlled scoop and pour. Sticker pasting — peel and place with aim. Crayon scribbling — free mark-making and first controlled strokes. Ring stacking — graduated size sequencing.
- Child traces all five pre-writing stroke types. Child transfers dry grains with a spoon with minimal spillage. Child peels and places stickers with deliberate aim.
Gross Motor
- Running in open space — sustained running with coordination and direction changes. Hopping with support — dominant foot hop with light adult hand available. Throwing ball — one-hand throw toward a target. Crawling through tunnel — with growing speed and confidence.
- Child runs for 20+ metres without losing balance. Child hops 3+ times on dominant foot with support. Child throws a ball reaching a target 1.5 metres away. Child crawls through tunnel independently.
Sensory
- Sand play continued — now with shape moulds. Water play continued — colour mixing with food colouring. Pretend play — first imagination and role-play exploration.
- Child uses shape moulds in sand with deliberate intent. Child observes and describes colour mixing in water play. Child engages in simple pretend play scenarios.
Creative
- Shape printing, colour mixing, and free colour choice (003, Worksheet, Worksheet). Colour exploration — mixing primary colours. Shape printing — dipping shape stamps in paint. Colour sorting and grouping. Process art with colour as the focus.
- Child creates art using specific colour choices. Child observes and describes colour mixing results. Child stamps shape prints deliberately.
Well-being
- Daily routine practice — children take increasing ownership of the classroom schedule. Identifying classroom objects — naming and locating materials and furniture. Teacher bonding time — small group conversations with teacher. Sit together circle — cooperative group sitting and listening.
- Child navigates daily routine without adult direction for most steps. Child names classroom objects and their locations. Child participates in small group teacher conversations.
General Awareness
- Shapes and colours (004). Six colours: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple. Colours in nature, food, and the classroom environment. Colour mixing exploration.
- Child names all 6 colours correctly. Child identifies all 6 colours in the environment. Child uses colour and shape vocabulary together to describe an object.

Music
- It's a Great Day to be in Pre-K (Jack Hartmann) — high energy movement song for classroom transition and joy. Shapes Song — names shapes with drawing gestures in the air. Colour Song — names all 6 colours with corresponding actions.
- Child participates in all three songs with actions. Child anticipates familiar songs by Week 3. Child connects song vocabulary to classroom shape and colour content.
Practical Life
- Children set up and return the colour sorting station, placing materials by colour during work and tidy-away.
- Child independently sorts and returns at least one colour group during setup or tidy-away.
